Saint Edward’s Athletic Hall of Fame 2011 inductees announced

VERO BEACH — Jeff Lamscha, Director of Athletics at Saint Edward’s School, has announced that Michael O. Lockwood ’79 and Daniel Colontrelle ’98 will be inducted into the School’s Athletic Hall of Fame during Homecoming celebrations at the school later this year. Mike Lockwood excelled on the Varsity Football Team, the Varsity Soccer Team and the Varsity Baseball Team. Danny Colontrelle played Varsity Football, Basketball, Lacrosse and Baseball at Saint Edward’s and captained the Football, Basketball and Lacrosse teams in his senior year. Continue reading

Pianist Jeffrey Biegel and Space Coast Symphony charm enthusiastic audience

VERO BEACH — “That conductor is on fire; he’s so adorable,” said Cynthia Grabenbauer, watching Aaron Collins as he led the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra in a program entitled, Biegel performs Emerson & Anderson, the second in the orchestra’s Summer Series. Kids enjoy safe Fourth of July "explosion" at Vero Beach Book Center

VERO BEACH — Over the past 15 years or so, the Vero Beach Book Center’s Bubble Wrap Explosion has become as much a part of the Fourth of July for local kids as cookouts and fireworks. All year, the book center staff hoards bubble wrap packaging when they open boxes and shipments, only to recycle it to be stomped on by hundreds of little feet as Independence Day approaches. Bubble wrap, when squashed by a huge roomful of kids at once, makes a sound like fireworks, but it’s safe, it’s not weather-dependent and it’s especially for kids. Continue reading

Guns stolen in burglaries in Central Beach

VERO BEACH — Thieves broke into two Central Beach homes earlier this month, and owners reported five firearms were stolen in the June 7th and June 10th thefts. Residents are concerned about the break-ins and hope this summer is not a repeat of last year when burglars also targeted the area. Continue reading

VERO BEACH — After spending $50,000 in one month on electric consultants and waiting for the mounting bills to arrive for water-sewer projects, the Vero Beach City Council is doing a gut-check about how much “expert” advice it needs and how much to spend for it. City of Vero Beach seeking new, permanent legal counsel

VERO BEACH — The City of Vero Beach has been without a permanent City Attorney since March, but the search is on to replace Charles Vitunac. With four members remaining after Councilman Brian Heady excused himself late into Tuesday’s regular meeting, the Vero Beach City Council voted 3-1 to begin advertising for a new City Attorney. Best-selling author David Baldacci packs in crowd at book center

VERO BEACH — As the clock neared 7 p.m. Monday the crowd swelled at the Vero Beach Book Center. More than 200 book lovers maneuvered their way through the store, trying to find a place to either sit or stand to see best-selling author David Baldacci. “I remember this building very well,” Baldacci told the standing-room-only crowd. “It’s beautiful.” Continue reading
